St. Maarten Bound

St. Maarten

This is our honeymoon destination. A huge thank you and acknowledgment to our honeymoon benefactors, S & J. You are so wonderful! And we are so excited!!!

So, a few questions, since my usual obsessive travel guide reading has given way to wedding planning. If you have been there, what were some favorite beaches, restaurants, things to do? A&F, no more procrastinating – you are the experts.

Also, island travelers, do you have favorite vacation rituals? For example, A&F have a glass of champagne after the beach – so refreshing! Coffee or a morning run? What works for you? The reason I ask is that DK & I want to enjoy every moment, but will probably not come to our post-wedding senses until it’s time to come home! And, we will never get enough of our friends and family the weekend of August 3rd, but with your great advice, we can take you with us.

We prefer the French side in general, but you should go over to Orient Bay at least 1 day, and restaurant Saratoga (the guy from SaratogaNY) on the Dutch side. You can also get some nice table linens on the Dutch side – Fer’s favorite part of the trip. Favorite beaches – Friar’s Bay and Il Pinel, favorite beach BBQ – on Mullet Bay, favorite restaurants – almost any in Grand Case. Tuesday night is a fun street festival in Grand Case. Will follow up in more detail (probably several times between now and August 3). I could map out your trip minute to minute – that would be helpful, wouldn’t it? xoxo

We stayed in Grand Case and all the restaurants we ate at there were good. Of course I don’t remember any names. One was something California?
Don’t be afraid to take the bus. We were the only tourists on the busses we took, but it’s only a dollar to go anywhere! So much cheaper than cabs.
Il Pinel was fun, and we also took the ferry over to St.Barth’s for a day. We went to Marigot which has a crazy mall and a museum/historical society which I think was closed every time we tried to go.
We didn’t like the Dutch side as much — it seemed to be swamped with Americans from cruise ships and locals looking to take advantage of them. Also, we’re not into casinos or much high end shopping.
    Where are you staying?

Beach rituals- I had a nice ritual in Pesaro, and only three days to be there. Morning was for touring and sight seeing. Lunch on the way back to the hotel. Same beach spot from 3 – 5 or 6 daily for reading, painting, swimming, sleeping. Clean up, dress for diner, bike to the pier to watch sunset by 830 with the neighbors while drinking wine and having antipasto. Park the bike after sunset, and find a place for dinner. Sit for music or see a movie afterward- there was a film festival in town. My other beach ritual is making a mandala in the sand with different colored stones sticks feathers, leaves, whatever- it takes a long time.
