Special Topics in Calamity Wedding Planning

Special Topics in Calamity PhysicsHere is what I am doing instead of wedding planning. THIS is the reason I don’t have colors. Really this book is a phenomenal ride. Blue (main character) will shame you into rereading (or reading for the first time) all your college requireds, just to keep up with her. And, a gumshoe to boot!
Read this book only if you don’t have other important things to do, like plan a wedding. Marisha Pessl channels Edward Gorey and Lisa Simpson.

    Hi SDH,
I knew it would be you I could talk to about this. Thank you. Well, I really loved the book, but totally know what you are talking about. Spoiler coming: I agree, the book went flat without Hannah and the blueboods on the scene. I liked the adolescent angle far better than what ensued. But, that said, the book got me to her cool website, and to Myspace for the first time in my life to visit Blue’s site. Weird.
What are you reading? Dare I ask? I just started 10 Days in the Valley and I’m Psyched!!!

10 days in the valley? do you mean 10 days in the hills, by jane smiley ? i am reading that right now! well, i checked it out of the library but haven’t actually started yet.

as for special topics, i think i was a little disappointed in the way it ended. i was like, huh, that’s it, that’s all? it felt like a lot of build up for a short ending. i will have to check out the myspace page! i liked the majority of the book, just felt that it ended sort of abruptly and weirdly.

Yeah, right! I agree with all of the above, including the correct book title : 10 days in the hills. Me too, just out of the library and just started! I’m so glad to have you to talk with! We seem to be living kind of parallel reading lives. Although, I’m sure you are doing far more and more interesting stuff (ah, the assumptions we make about your profession!) I had to do some research first into the decameron, since I remember nothing about it at all from college. I’m just starting, so let me know if you head into it as well.
